We recently took in a little family of Dachshunds. Their owner had no idea Velvet was pregnant, and was surprised to approach her crate & find 2 little newborn bodies along the way. Without the knowledge, resources, or skills to help Velvet through motherhood and give the babies the best chance at life, her owner reached out to us for help.
This tiny family is all settled into a foster home, but they aren’t doing great. The first few days mama was carrying them around alot and trying to hide that. Once sh felt more relaxed, she stopped doing that but then we noticed she was actively moving the runtiest baby away from the rest of them and really ignoring him. We did everything we could and tried to get him special attention with a newborn bottle feeder, but we sadly lost him despite our best efforts. A few days later, a couple of the other babies started to have gunky eyes and one even appeared as though she was gasping for breath.
The tiny, less than 2 week old baby girl was rushed into the doctor. With neonates, there isn’t always much that can be done. Everyone has been started on general antibiotics to try to help, is getting breathing treatments, and we’re anxiously awaiting PCR tests so we can understand what their tiny bodies might be fighting. They don’t even weigh 1/2 pound and are fighting for their lives. Help us cover the cost of their care and any additional medication or treatments they might need to help them fight!
